Optimal Umbilical Cord Clamping

December 8, 2012 By Deena Leave a Comment

Dr. Alan Greene gives us an insightful look into the practice of immediate clamping of the umbilical cord and the detriments of doing so.  These include: decrease of red blood cells, decrease of white blood cells, decrease in baby’s iron levels and decreased oxygen levels.  His talk is thorough and compelling.

He advocates for waiting at least 90 seconds before clamping / cutting the cord.  The optimal time for cord clamping is after the cord completely ceases to pulse and send blood to the baby.

Please, it’s worth your 18 minutes to see how doing something that is physiologically normal, can help your baby over the course of his lifetime.

For more on this please read my earlier post “What about that cord blood?”.

Sat Nam.
